Why the hell didn't they try to recruit from thier, with a legitimate noble from thier region, or even take some ships and men from his own household?

Again, similiar to Lady Mormont, even if a small house, well trained men with infrastructure, equipment and logistics would make a huge difference when augumenting the wildings army.

Yes, many men died under Stannis. However, in the years of those who followed Stannis, some men would have remained and trained others in thier absense. Even if a ship's worth of crew and troops, it would have made sense. Remember each region is equivalent to a country,each minor house equivalent to a county. Davos could have raised at least 500 men. As a favoured noble of Stannis, he must have been on par with the Boltons (who had been at war with Robb themselves).
